December has a weird power of making you go crazy with ideas. One example: my friend calls the other day and says “Zvonus, I need some sun, some warm air… let’s go to Cancun, we can take it easy, smoke a cigar, we can finish the books we never started, maybe we fall in love… what do you say?” I said: “Well, if you would have told me yesterday morning, maybe I would have gone”. I know that comment left him in the dark.
No, the question of the week is not “why am I not going to Cancun”, but rather “in a town where clubs hardly survive a season, can Cuba del sub-Sol defeat the trend?”.
Spacious and decorated as Cuba, Republika del Sol, with marine fauna nestled under the floors, with monitors that have you lost into space and sound that makes your insides vibrate, Cuba del sub-Sol also has a lounge, a bit more quiet and relaxed, prone to giving sinful messages.
The lounge has its own bar area where a certain Catalin mixed us a great Cosmo, and where your vocal chords enjoy a little less over usage (“Oh, is that really Loredana?... She’s sensational…”), your posture can afford to be more relaxed, while you lay on the soft sofas.
The crowd was humongous last night to celebrate the club’s inauguration. The show was ambitious. The international guests brought a mélange of musical styles, the VIP’s monopolized the dance floor, and the club’s destiny seems to be glorious. Paradoxically, all the surrounding craziness, relaxation and a care-free feeling enveloped me, just like a still shot in Havana.
Thus, my dear friend, I went to Cuba last night, and I think I’ll spend the cold months there, with cigars, music, with a lot of dancing and fondling space to sink a battleship of worries (not sure if I could start to write a book with that statement, though!). Cancun can wait, but I’m afraid Cuba needs to be tasted and discovered NOW.
